Glossary AIKDO - A Japanese martial art that typically emphasizes joining and flow, using the opponents own energy against them. It includes joint locking and body throwing techniques. JKD - Jeet Kun Do is a fighting system developed by martial arts innovator and actor Bruce Lee. Jeet Kune Do: An extremely difficult term to define since it is a unique concept. The literal translation is the way of the intercepting hand or foot. Some people regard it as the art and philosophy of the late Bruce Lee. Some folks adhere to a strict interpretation of his writings from his book "The Tao of Jeet Kune Do". While I have heard others say, "it's whatever works, man." Everyone's JKD (Jeet Kune Do) is different because not everyone learns the principles of JKD from the same instructor or the same curriculum. Therefore what follows should be considered my expression of this definition. JKD is going to the heart of the matter. It is the search for the truth in combat. It involves the pursuit by the individual to find his or her own truth in combat for themselves. For me it has meant training in the original Jun Fan arts as well as the Filipino Martial arts. Since combat happens in all four ranges of combat (kicking, punching, trapping and grappling) we should research the ground game as well. JKD is not an accumulation of technique. But rather how techniques are done. The refinement of certain attributes are a byproduct of JKD training. Timing, rhythm, speed, body mechanics and sensitivity are all enhanced by JKD training. These attributes are the essential ingredient that allows the JKD practitioner to intercept the opponent's hand or foot. While what you read here is correct (as far as I know) it cannot define the totality of Jeet Kune Do. DUMOG - Kali Grappling techniques. ESCRIMA - A Filipino martial art that emphasizes stick and sword fighting. EXECUTIVE PFS - A fighting system designed to be used for military and police applications as well as for self-defense by ordinary people. It combines multiple martial art forms--including Filipino Kali and Escrima (from the Spanish term for skirmish)--which allows users to adapt to changing conditions. GUNTING -A technique aimed at disabling an opponent's arm or hand. Typically with the elbow. KALI - A pragmatic Filipino martial art that emphasizes a very direct and efficient fighting style. KRAV MAGA - An Israeli martial art similar to JKD and Kali. It focuses on maximum efficiency in real life situations. It's the close combat system taught to IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) special forces. MUAY THAI - Otherwise known as Thai boxing, which emphasizes the use of arms, elbows, shins, knees and hands. The Thai military uses a form of Muay Thai called Lerdrit. SAVATE - A French martial art that's stresses using hands and feet somewhat like kick boxing. SILAT - A Southeast Asian martial art.
