I would like to know where I can learn to make full use of this weapon, more for self defence.

By telescopic are you talking about a police "asp"? The difficult thing about striking with an asp is that the only part to do damage is the very tip of it. When it hits however it can devistate.

If you want to learn how to strike with a normal baton or stick, try Escrima or silat.

how close is the nearest bin?throw it in there.what a lot of answerers seem to forget is the fact that how long do you think it takes to get the weapon out and extended?there useful when 3 or 4 cops have them and there beating on 1 person.

That’s a tricky question to answer. As you can probably tell from some other answers it’s not exactly a popular choice. Here’s the trick, where I am these are illegal. If you live in the US, UK or Canada they are most likely illegal where you are as well. Using one can get you in big trouble, even carrying one could be trouble. Where I live even owning one and keeping it in the closet is illegal.

So once past the legal issues it still has more problems. It’s not an ideal weapon. Batons are well and fine and are related to the oldest weapon known to man, the staff or even simpler any old stick. But telescopic ones pose a problem, depending on their construction they may collapse at the wrong time. Also using any weapon tends to make one foolhardy as well as makes you dependent on the weapon to fight. Any time you use a weapon to defend yourself it should be used primarily to block incoming attacks. You should never strike with a weapon, use hands and feet for that. It’s safer and easier to deal with legally. Plus it confuses your opponent. They never expect someone carrying a bat to kick and punch them, they expect you to swing the bat.

If you are going to use it, extend it with a very sharp flicking motion so it locks in the extended position. Then turn it to a backhanded grip so it lays along your arm toward the elbow. This now is ready to be used as a blocker. Anytime they attack use your arms to block in whatever martial arts style you prefer but now when they attack on the side with the baton they will hurt themselves on it rather then just hitting your arm. If you insist on striking with it use it like an elbow strike and use a wrist motion to flick it outward just before impact.

Please note that the use of a baton or any weapon is extremely dangerous and by doing so you accept that you may injure or kill someone. You must take full responsibility for your actions and night myself nor anyone on these boards can be held accountable for advice given. I highly recommend you reconsider this option and instead use your brain and run away if at all possible. A wise man avoids the fight. Train hard and you wont need any weapon.

    My advice!

    Don’t use it at all.

Even if you are defending yourself and fighting for your life you are carrying a weapon and no court in the world will look at that as defence! If you want to defend yourself in a street legal way and use weapons then you need to take classes. There you will learn how to use everyday objects that do just as much damage if not more but there is a time and a place for that sort of information!

Take classes and start the journey
