In what ways is Shotokan karate good for self defence? Is it it’s stance, punches etc? plz give specifics thanks.
there is no one specific thing that makes any style effective, its all on how you train and how good your instructor is.
if you dont train for real situations and practice striking you will never be any good.
point sparing or tag sparing is one of the worst ways to train, it teaches you how not to hit. i dont teach my students how to prepare for tournaments, i teach them how to prepare for real life situations. that is far more important then getting some trophy.
phociny85 you know nothing about a real dojo or karate.
Watch Lyota Machida and ask if Shotokan Karate is good.

The objective taught in Shotokan Karate is to fight without leaving a scratch to ones self.

I have been training in shotokan for years the objective is basicly to hit without getting hit. The punches in shotokan are designed to come from the hips you pivot on the punches strikes are fast but hard. Shotkan uses your opponets own strength against them. The stance for shotkan is basic fist up to about your shoulders and feet are shoulder with apart. Shotkan emphasizes on footwork

It has benefited me heaps i have a good reaction time and i’m stronger and faster and much more flexible. It also teaches good methods of self defense utilizing move that are easily applicable.

Anyone who gives you "Specifics" has no idea how to use this system as a whole. Many of the Karate systems have been bastardized and watered down so much that it is difficult to actually use them until you reach a certain level. I thought I was a pretty smart guy when I was a 1st Dan. Now I look back and think "I knew nothing back then". Keep training it will come to you in time.
Look at other arts from the same region. Most systems of Karate are so similar it isn’t even funny, however a different point of view may help you understand better.

Not realy. This day learning karate is like a swimmer that never touch water. They have to many restriction in sparring and score by point. Also remember that karate is Mcdojo, means that you can get black belt in 1 year or 2 if you pay a certain fees. Lack of power training and all they focus is on style. If you want self defence then muay thai is pretty good.

phocincy…..you’re an idiot. There are Karate McDojo’s, same as any style….but not all Karate is a McDojo. In a good school, getting your blackbelt in 3 years would be quite an achievment. I started to write out an explanation of why Shotokan uses a points system but it was taking to long and you’re probably to stupid to understand anyway. Basically…points sparring is about making the shots count, where boxing or whatever is about wearing your opponet down and the best in the world knows he will get hit….in Shotokan the idea is to avoid being hit and to take your opponet down with one or a small few hits, a shot to the shoulder or glancing blow doesn’t count as a point…only serious hits count. The idea is in real combat, if you just go in full tilt and get yourself hurt as well…even if you win, you are unable to continue fighting.
Shotokan is an excellent system of self defense. It is fairly well rounded, with strikes, takedowns, locks, joint manipulations, and even a little grappling in some dojos…..besides, you don’t want to grapple in a real self defence situation anyway. It teaches you very powerful and quick attacks, increases your flexibility and stamina, and in general just focuses much more on self defence and real combat that many "sport styles" do (assuming you take traditional karate and not the aformentioned McDojos,…which are sport styles). The stances are strong, good footwork, strikes are deadly powerful, and the overall style is helpful both physically and mentally with self defence.
