Is Apathy a sin or is it psychological self defence mechanism that kicks in when a human being can’t/won’t/confused/unable to decide what kind of religion to follow. Or finds that Religious bodies and "God" can’t accept Him/her?

I think I follow you. You are saying that since the Christians will damn you if choose to accept Islam and Muslims will damn you if accept Christianity you just can’t get too worried about being damned. This is not to pick on just the Christians or the Muslims since they will also damn one another just as quickly. I don’t think the Religion vs. Reason question creates apathy in most people. I wish that it did, since if people didn’t really care about these things they would be less willing to kill one another over their differences. All religion is poison.

It can be both and neither.

Indecision can cause apathy and it can be the cause of apathy. "I don’t care" is usually rooted in "I don’t want to put out the energy it takes to care."

Almost all the defense mechanisms as delineated by Freud could be called sins in some situations. I guess reaction formation wouldn’t be a sin, but even that depends on the specifics of the reaction.

Of course if a person is focused on following a religion instead of following God, that’s probably a big part of his can’t / won’t / confused / etc.

Defence mechanism, sometimes there are things you don’t want to let in.

Honestly though, I’d rather feel, than not feel anything at all like empathy, I’m actually ashamed of myself when I act apathetic.

Apathy is "mental laziness." Laziness is a sin, i.e. slothfulness.

I don’t believe in any superstitious nonsense, but I wouldn’t describe myself as apathetic either. Why do people have to belong to belief systems? Isn’t just accepting actual facts and reality a good enough path to follow?

Apathy is a lack of interest in something. It is not caused, it is chosen. Whether or not it is a self-defense mechanism or a sin is totally dependent on your worldview. If you believe that God made man in His image, with the ability to choose his behavior, and that man has chosent to break his relationship with God, you will see that apathy is just a turning away from God. It is sin. If, on the otherhand, you believe that man is the arbiter of his own destiny, because God does not exist, and is affected by his environment to the point of his environment "causing" his behavior, then it is a defense mechanism against the oppressive environment. To throw a wrench in the mix, calling the behavior a defense mechanism could be a pathological reaction to the denial of a God who is right there, but who we don’t want to see.

For many it doesn’t have to be neither. Many can’t see the truth about God and his purpose for mankind, due to their lack of insight and understanding. (2 Corinthians 4:4) among whom the god of this system of things has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, that the illumination of the glorious good news about the Christ, who is the image of God, might not shine through.

Yes Apathy can come to play when their hearts no longer cares about what God requires from them. It can cause them to lose their lives, like in the days of NOAH!! (While making other things their priority in life: work, school, family, material possessions, anxiety of life, recreation, the gym etc) God has told mankind to seek his kingdom first…which is a literal government, we are asked to pray for in the Lord’s Prayer. (all other things will be added to you) Matt. 6:9

For some it will mean salvation, but for many it will mean their own destruction for most are not living their lives in harmony with his will and purpose.

(John 6:44) No man can come to me unless the Father, who sent me, draws him; and I will resurrect him in the last day.

Persons heart has to be rightly dispose to receive his message of Salvation that is being preached before the end comes….no matter the cause apathy, ignorance, self defense mechanism.
