Like if a lion savaged a lion tamer who was whipping him, or a dog giving a deep bite to someone who had been kicking it? Do they still get put down, or do they have a right to self defence?
should put the trainer down, it seems that animals have no right to self defence,
my next door neighbour had a gentle sweet rottweiler, and one of the local boys (11) at the time used to throw stones at her every time he went past twice a day to and from school.
my neighbour sent pictures to the boys parents and the police telling them what this brat was doing. one day the dog was free in the garden and the boy hit her with a stick again caught on film, the dog bit him, within 48 hours the dog was dead, police not interested in the real evidence, just that a dog had bitten a boy where is the justice in that.
They would probably still get put down. Not every time – for instance, I believe that Sigfield and Roy saved the tiger that attacked one of them – but most of the time.

I really hope they have a right to self defense. But I believe that animals are put down. I’ve heard that if they bite once, they’ll do it again. It’s sad because some people deserve to be SEVERELY bitten by the animals they torment and abuse.

they would get put down….people dont think of animals as anything but animals…..they dont care if it was in self defense or not…….

Well, in San Francisco, when the tiger took the handler’s arm off, nothing happened. But when that same tiger leaped out of the enclosure and killed one guy and started mauling one of the other three who was teasing him, it got shot.
Normally, I think, if a dog kills someone, the dog gets killed also. The same would be true with mountain lions, if they can find them.
Animals only have the rights people give them. Your pets are only considered property.
If animals had the right to self-defense, we would be living behind enclosures.

Self-defense excuses a crime. Animals can’t commit crimes. Therefore, the excuse is irrelevant.

I believe its all circumstantial, and depends large in part the person handling the case…If it can be proven that the pet was abused to the point that calls for a aggressive response, than it would live. Most close minded persons will however see nothing but an animal that has attacked, and has the potential to attack again. Its easier for most in the long run to deem it as a incurably Aggressive animal and have it put down immediately.

it will death row
animals are meant to be subserviant therefore if it attacks somoeone it will be put down
if they were not witnessed by someone then wouldn’t they deny kicking the dog!?!

They should have a right to self defence yes. However no country I know of gives them that right in the same way it does a human.Mainly this is because the human can deny harming the animal and unless there are witnesses who took photo’s the authorities will take their word for it.
The exception (here in the UK at least) is if a dog bites someone in self defence while it is on it’s owners property-however this only applies if the person bitten had no right or invitation to be there. This is not as simple as it sounds as the owner of the dog still needs to prove it was provoked AND that it did not leave his/her property during the incident.

Since the law is based on the guilty act (actus reus) and the guilty mind (mens rea) you couldn’t prosecute it because you couldn’t examine its mind could you, thus depending on how the incident came about and how far it was provoked it will either be kept alive or killed. Simple.

Every circumstance is different. If you got savaged by a dog in a public place then the animal would be put down. However, if you climbed into a secure garden from which the animal could not escape, for example, to get a ball back or break in, and got mauled, the animal would not be destroyed as it was guarding its own territory and the owner could not reasonablyhave expected you to be there or prevented the attack. Households are allowed to have guard dogs – and what good is a guard dog that will lick you to death?
