Both require great cardio but Muay thai has the advantage of striking, kicks, knees and elbows.

Either discipline is merely a tool of just that:"discipline." Without that, it doesn’t matter what form you decide to study. Begin to discipline yourself in physical ways that you are not accustomed to. Learn to balance your movement and weight distribution. Put your body in unfamiliar situations. This will bring fast results. Keep it guessing and don’t get bogged down in routine. Watch videos on Wing Chun, Boxing, Muay Thai, Judo etc. Each has something to teach and may cover things not mentioned in other studies. For real world self defense, check out Keysi fighting method. All MMA styles are regulated; traditional.

I think wushu is better for self defence and fitness.If you like to combat you can choose sanda which is also wushu but only for combat.If you prefer peace,you can learn chanqu,nanqu,taiji and other routines.

I am a big fan of muay thai on the street. I have used it to great effect against street bralwers. The leg kick and knees are just great. And let us not forget the clinch.

Muay thai cause kicks are more tiring to do than to punch. Especially if they tell you to kick ten times as fast as you can.

Take your pick, ether one would be ridiculously effective against your average street punk.
Both though, require a very high degree of cardio conditioning to pull off in a street scenario, so you will be well on your way to dropping that 30kg. by getting serious with either discipline.
